Kristin Phillips
Kristin D. Phillips is an associate professor of sociocultural anthropology at Emory University. Phillips’ current research studies the intersections of energy systems, inequality, and society in both East Africa and the southern United States. She is drafting a book manuscript–titled Keeping the Lights On: Bills, Housing, & Energy Justice in the Deep South–on the impact and experience of high utility bills and energy justice organizing in Georgia. Building on that research, she is now studying the economic, environmental, and community implications of the data center energy buildout in the South. Phillips’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Fulbright-Hays. Her first book, An Ethnography of Hunger (Indiana University Press: 2018) won the 2020 Book Prize from the Society for Economic Anthropology.
